Did You Wash Your Hands?

In October, I asked the kids to go to the bathroom and wash their hands "really good" with soap and water.  Each student washed for at least 20 seconds and dried them with the air dryer.  They put their hands up in the air on the way back to the classroom so that they didn't touch anything.  I then passed around a piece of bread that their "clean hands" could touch.  I removed another piece of bread with tongs without any hands touching it.  The students guessed which piece of bread would get moldy faster.   The students loved going over several times a day to see if the pieces of bread had changed.  When something finally appeared they were overjoyed!!!! "Look Ms. Miller!  Our bread is green!!!!!"  The piece of bread that they touched had mold growing on it 3 days before the bread they hadn't touched!
